Today started the Democratic National Committee Convention (DNCC). The speakers reflected the open arms nature of the Democratic Party, and how we are able to bridge the gaps that exist in America to be a party of unity.
I was astounded once we got into Pepsi Center and were able to watch the proceedings of the convention. It was visually stunning. The stage, decked out in an abstraction of stars and stripes was the perfect backdrop for the night's events. I suppose I should take a minute and explain to everyone that this convention is extra special to me. In 2004 I volunteered a little on then State Senator Obama's campaign for the U.S. Senate and also got to hear him address the 2004 DNCC. A year later I went to work for him in his Chicago office and got to know him, and many of the people now behind his presidential campaign, pretty well. So being here, now, this almost seems like everything has gone full circle.
Watching tonight's speakers, I was filled with a sense of wonder and joy at how well our party is able to include people from every walk of life. We had speakers from Chicago's South Side, women leaders, and even a Republican address the attendees. While the evening was full of emotion and (dare I say it) hopefulness for the future of this nation, the crowning glory was our very own Michelle Obama.
Listening to Michelle talk about how she and Barack met (and how she shot him down several times before an ice cream cone changed her mind), we got to see into the Obama household. Many people around me were moved to tears by the beauty of her words. As a woman, I find her to be someone truly to look up to. As a law student, I find her to be a great role model. After she finished law school, Michelle Obama went to work at a large law firm in Chicago. She later gave up this career to follow her heart into a career into public service. Not many people know much about the powerhouse that is Michelle Obama, and I am glad that this campaign is letting the world see what a wonderful and amazing woman she truly is. I am truly proud to be able to say that I come from the same great city as Michelle Obama and that I am also entering the same profession as she has. She will undoubtedly be the first lady that this nation needs.
I wish everyone could have fit into Pepsi Center tonight so that everyone could experience the comraderie and wonderment that I saw. With this start to the convention, I am really excited to see what is in store next!
